Resistance to Fusarium

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae is a soilbourne fungus which causes basal rot of onion. The fungus infects the roots and basal plate of the bulbs leading to severe pre-and post-harvest losses.
Fusarium basal rot is favoured by warm temperatures so it is likely to become a greater problem in the future under current climate change models. Growers in the UK and worldwide have reported that Fusarium basal rot is becoming more prevalent in their onion crops.
We are currently screening the onion diversity set for Fusarium resistance.
